Where we work in Michigan

  • Detroit

Michigan's largest metro has 28 buildings over 100 meters concentrated downtown along the river, led by the Renaissance Center towers, driving steady demand for high-rise facade and window work.

  • Grand Rapids

West Michigan's largest downtown has a growing skyline of 26 notable towers including hospital buildings like Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, and already hosts two active drone building-cleaning operators.

  • Ann Arbor

A dense university downtown mixing 19th-century masonry with modern mid-rises and a small number of high-rises, plus extensive street tree canopy that adds to window soiling and cleaning frequency.

  • Warren

Michigan's third-largest city and part of Metro Detroit, home to the General Motors Technical Center and the Detroit Arsenal complex, both large commercial and industrial campuses needing exterior maintenance.

Season and scheduling

Detroit's typical freeze-free stretch runs from roughly late April to late October, setting the practical window for exterior washing work before winter conditions return.

Detroit's average first freeze is late October, and the average last freeze is late April.

Water-based washing pauses in freezing weather, and recurring clients are booked at the start of the window.

Regulatory notes

How we operate in Michigan

These are the rules that shape a job here; we plan around them at the survey, not on site.

  • Michigan's Aeronautics Code, amended by SB 992 in 2016, preempts local governments from regulating drone ownership or operation, except for a locality's own municipal drone fleet or a locally owned airport's existing authority.

  • SB 992 also makes it a misdemeanor to use a drone in a way that invades a reasonable expectation of privacy, to harass a person by drone, or to violate a restraining order using a drone.

  • Michigan has no standalone state critical-infrastructure drone statute, though MCL 750.45a makes interfering with a critical facility using a drone a felony punishable by up to four years.

  • A 2026 legislative package known as SHIELD would add designated no-drone zones around correctional facilities, law enforcement buildings and critical infrastructure, but it had not been enacted as of this research.

  • Detroit: Detroit has no standalone municipal drone ordinance because of state preemption, but its Recreation Department asks operators to get advance permission from the Director of Recreation before flying in city parks.

  • Downtown Detroit sits inside the Class B airspace of Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, so commercial drone flights there need LAANC authorization, which a local FAA-approved UAS service supplier also provides.

  • Michigan does not require a specific state contractor license for pressure or soft washing, but a mobile power washing business must hold a groundwater discharge permit from EGLE covering its wastewater.

  • Michigan EGLE requires mobile power washing operations to obtain a groundwater discharge permit or qualify for an exemption, and wastewater reaching a municipal or private storm sewer generally needs NPDES permit coverage.

  • Detroit's Property Maintenance Code, Section 8-15-34(d)(8), requires owners of buildings five stories or taller to have exterior walls and roof-mounted structures inspected by a competent person at least every five years.

Building stock

Detroit has 28 buildings over 100 meters tall, with 9 exceeding 150 meters, nearly all concentrated in the downtown core along the Detroit River.

Grand Rapids has 26 notable downtown towers including River House, the tallest residential building in Michigan, alongside hospital and historic church buildings in its skyline.

What to expect in Michigan: two documented projects

We have not yet published a documented project in Michigan. Until we do, the two jobs below are the reference for scope, duration and price. Both were delivered in Florida, where we operate as Vista Drone Cleaning, with the same equipment, method, insurance and price sheet that crews bring to Michigan.

Belmont Village needed its entire exterior - facade, windows and floor surfaces - cleaned without closing a single entrance or moving a resident. Lifts, scaffolding, swing stages and rope access were all off the table.
